Boroughmuir Apartments

(Old Boroughmuir High School)

A development of 87 homes occupying the former Boroughmuir High School on Viewforth in SW Edinburgh, Boroughmuir Apartments features one, two, three and four bedroom flats, with double-height ceilings taking full advantage of the large windows in the B-listed building. Constructed between 1911 and 1914, this was the largest school designed by architect John Alexander Carfrae (1868 - 1947) and was notably one of the first in Edinburgh to utilise steel-frame construction. The building comprises three storeys with additional basement, mezzanine and attic floors, arranged around a double quadrangle on a sloping site. These quadrangles were once covered by glazed roofs but these were removed during the redevelopment and now elevated walkways cross these internal spaces.

The architectural style of the building is loosely Venetian, with giant Roman Ionic columns along the upper facade and a two-storey entrance porch. Red sandstone ashlar contrasts with cream harled bays. The main building was extended to the north in the 1970s. With a new school built next to the Union Canal a quarter-mile (0.4 km) to the northwest, the old building was sold to developers CALA by the City of Edinburgh Council in 2015 for £14.5 million. The single-storey extensions were demolished and the development completed by 2021, when it was opened by senior Boroughmuir pupils.
