A large limestone cave on the north coast of Sutherland, the Smoo Cave lies a mile (1.5 km) southeast of Durness. The Allt Smoo falls into a loch in an inner cavern. The cave, which is 15m (50 feet) high and 30m (100 feet) broad, was made famous by Sir Walter Scott following a visit in 1814 and by a print by English painter Daniell William (1769 - 1837).
