Alastair Sim

Edinburgh-born actor, particularly remembered for his comedy roles. An educated but shy man, Sim lectured in elocution before turning to a career in acting. He appeared in more than 50 films between 1935 and his death in 1976, including in drag as the headmistress of the outrageous girl's school in The Belles of St Trinian's (1954). Other notable roles include Green for Danger (1946), Scrooge (1951), An Inspector Calls (1954) and The Millionairess (1960).

He was the first actor to become Rector of the University of Edinburgh (1948).
