Scottish monarch. Son of Walter, the 6th Great Steward of Scotland and Robert the Bruce's sister, Marjorie. He was for a time Guardian of Scotland and a central figure in the Second War of Scottish Independence. He succeeded his uncle King David II in 1371. King Robert II was the first of the Stuart Dynasty of Scottish (and later British) sovereigns.
He married Elisabeth Mure of Rowallan, a close relation, who bore him several children, including John, the Earl of Carrick, who later became King Robert III and Alexander, the Wolf of Badenoch. His first wife having died, he married Euphemia de Ross in 1355 and she bore him four further children.
Robert, who was old when he succeeded to the throne, quickly let power pass to his sons. He died at Dundonald Castle in South Ayrshire.
