Andrew (Andy) Robin

1935 - 2019

Wrestler, outdoorsman and owner of Hercules the Bear. Born in Stirling, the son of a miner and a hotel cook, and raised in Raploch. He preferred the outdoors to school and enjoyed boxing and wrestling. Initally making his career as a forester, he became a professional wrestler, becoming Commonwealth Mid Heavyweight Champion in 1964, appearing on television and touring the USA. He was also a familiar face on the Highland Games circuit, not only wrestling, but putting the shot and throwing the hammer. However, Robin was best known for Hercules the Bear (1975 - 2001), whom he acquired from the Highland Wildlife Park in 1976.

In 2016, he was inducted into Scotland's Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame on the steps of Perth City Hall, the scene of some of his most notable wrestling bouts, including against Harold Sakata, better known as Odd Job from the James Bond film Goldfinger.

Robin and his wife ran the Sheriffmuir Inn in the hills above Dunblane for many years, but latterly lived in Auchterarder, where he died. Following a funeral service in Auchterarder Parish Church, he was buried next to Hercules in Langass Woodland in North Uist.
