Walter Fitz Gilbert


? - c.1346

Norman noble. Coming from Hambledon in Northumbria, he joined Robert the Bruce (1274 - 1329) on the battlefield at Bannockburn. As a reward, Bruce granted lands in Renfrewshire, the Lothians and those of Cadzow in South Lanarkshire to Fitz Gilbert in 1315. He built Cadzow Castle and left two sons; David gave rise to the Lords, Marquesses, then Dukes of Hamilton and Earls of Arran and John, ancestor of the Earls of Haddington.
