A mansion and estate on the southern shore of the Firth of Tay in N Fife, Birkhill House or Birkhill Castle lies 1½ miles (2.5 km) west southwest of Balmerino. The house was built in 178 for Viscount Dundee, and remains the home of the Earl and Countess of Dundee. The house is of three storeys, with a two-storey eastern extension and service block. It was extended 1812-14 and remodelled in a Tudor-Baronial style in 1857-59 by the architect David Bryce (1803-76). The substantial circular entrance tower was inspired by Castle Fraser in Aberdeenshire. Inside are elegant public rooms, 14 bedrooms, a billiard room, stylish antiques and paintings including full-length portraits in the wood-panelled library. The house is let for functions and events.
Birkhill lies within an 809-ha (2000-acre) estate which includes parkland, extensive mature woodlands and a 4-ha (10 acre) formal garden.
