Prof Andrew (Andy) MacMillan


1928 - 2014

Architect. Born in Maryhill, the son of a railway porter, MacMillan was educated at Maryhill Public School and North Kelvinside Secondary School. He trained at Glasgow School of Art while working with Glasgow Corporation Housing Department and the East Kilbride New Town Development Corporation. He joined the eminent architectural practice of Gillespie, Kidd & Coia in 1954, and became a partner in 1966. Working with Jack Coia and Metzstein, he designed a number of modernist churches, schools, college and university buildings particularly in the New Towns and overspill estates, together with St. Peter's Seminary (Cardross), St. Bride's Catholic Church (East Kilbride), Bonar Hall (Dundee) and the planned marina village of Craobh Haven. He joined the University of Glasgow in 1973 as Professor of Architecture and served as Head of the Mackintosh School of Architecture until 1994. MacMillan has won the Royal Institute of British Architects Award for Architecture on four occasions, the Royal Scottish Academy Gold Medal in 1975 and was awarded an OBE in 1992. He was a member of several public bodies, including the Scottish Arts Council (1978-82).

Macmillan died in Inverness whilst involved in judging on behalf of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.
