William Grant


(Lord Prestongrange)

1701 - 1764

Lawyer, judge and politician. The son of Sir Francis Grant (Lord Cullen; 1658 - 1726), Grant brought up at Monymusk in Aberdeenshire. He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1722. Between 1731 and 1745, he served as Procurator (chief legal advisor) to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and also its Principal Clerk. He was appointed Solicitor General for Scotland in 1737 and Lord Advocate in 1746. He bought the house and estate of Prestongrange in East Lothian in the same year. Grant served as Member of Parliament for the Elgin Burghs (1747-54), He was then appointed a Lord of Session and a Lord of Justiciary, taking his seat on the bench as Lord Prestongrange in 1754. He died in Bath but lies buried in Prestonpans Parish Church. His likeness by Allan Ramsay (1713-84) is held by the National Galleries of Scotland. His daughters married well; the eldest, Janet, married the 4th Earl of Hyndford in 1749, Jane became the wife of Robert Dundas of Arniston in 1756 and Agnes married Sir George Suttie of Balgone in 1757.
