A settlement of N Midlothian, Woodhouselee lies a quarter-mile (0.5 km) northwest of Easter Howgate and 2½ miles (4 km) north of Penicuik. A prisoner-of-war camp was located here during World War II. The modern settlement developed in conjunction with the nearby military firing ranges at Castlelaw, although the houses are all now in civilian ownership.
Woodhouselee Castle is located on the River North Esk 2½ miles (4 km) to the southeast.
