A hamlet by the main A91 trunk road leading eastwards through Fife to Cupar and St Andrews, Burnside is situated a mile (1.5 km) to the southwest of Gateside close to the River Eden which once powered a corn mill there. Road tolls were collected here prior to the formation of county road boards in 1878.
