Ballencrieff Castle

A hamlet in East Lothian, Ballencrieff is located 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Haddington and a mile (1.5 km) south of Aberlady. Ballencrieff Castle, which sits nearby, was an ancestral home of the Murray family until it was burnt down in 1862. The first Governor General of Canada, General James Murray, was born here in 1721. There was briefly a station here (1846-47) on what was the North British Railway but the East Coast Main Line still passes to the north.
