Riccarton

East Ayrshire

A southern suburb of Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire, Riccarton lies on the south side of the River Irvine. Once noted for its market, it was created a burgh in 1638 and connected to Kilmarnock with the building of a bridge in 1726. In 1909 was absorbed into that town. The Parish Church dates from 1823, while the Riccarton Institute was built by a local coal-owner and continues as a community centre. There is an oil depot and automotive parts industries.
