Ruthwell

An agricultural settlement near the Solway coast of Dumfries and Galloway, Ruthwell lies 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Dumfries. The world's first commercial savings bank was established here by Dr Henry Duncan in 1810. Inside Ruthwell Parish Church can be found the Ruthwell Cross, one of the best examples in Scotland of an Anglican Sculptured Cross from the 8th Century AD. The settlement of Ruthwell Station grew up 1½ miles (2.5 km) to the north northwest around the former railway station.
