A former milltown village in Dumfries and Galloway, Holywood lies 4 miles (6.5 km) northwest of Dumfries. A railway station operated here from 1849 to 1953. Nearby, in the valley of the Cairn Water, is a prehistoric stone circle known as the Twelve Apostles, close to which a Premonstratensian abbey was founded in the 13th Century.
