Spireslack

An abandoned sheep farm in East Ayrshire and former open-cast coal mine which crosses the boundary into South Lanarkshire, Spireslack is situated to the north of the former settlement of Glenbuck and 3¾ miles (6 km) east northeast of Muirkirk. The open cast workings were excavated 2003-07 and have been described as a "geologist's playground" exposing layers of Carboniferous shale, ironstone and coal, some 325 million year in age, to a depth of 80m (262 feet) over a length of a half-mile (1 km). The scale of the exposure is said to be unparalleled in Scotland.
