Longside

Aberdeenshire

A linear, tree-lined commuter settlement in the Buchan district of Aberdeenshire, Longside is situated 6 miles (10 km) west of Peterhead. It was rebuilt in 1801 as a planned village by James Ferguson of Pitfour and developed in association with weaving and the quarrying of granite at Cairngall. Longside has long been associated with military aviation. Britain's most northerly airship base (RNAS Longside) was established 3 miles (5 km) to the south at Lenabo in 1915, while RAF Peterhead (Longside Airfield) was constructed 2½ miles (4 km) to the east of Longside in 1941 and operated until 1945. This is now the home of Buchan Aero Club.
