Darvel

East Ayrshire

One of the three so-called 'valley burghs' of East Ayrshire, Darvel is situated at the confluence of the River Irvine and Glen Water, 9 miles (14.5 km) east of Kilmarnock. The village of Darvel has been associated with the production of terylene, carpets and lace and the discoverer of penicillin, Sir Alexander Fleming (1881 - 1955), grew up at Lochfield Farm nearby.
