A fine sandy beach that extends east for 1½ miles (2.5 km) from Broughty Castle (Dundee City) to the mouth of the Dichty Water at Balmossie (Angus). Behind is the Esplanade, Broughty Ferry Local Nature Reserve and Barnhill Rock Garden. This was once a pleasure beach which provided an escape for the workers of Dundee, and it remains popular today as the nearest beach to the city centre.
