The Fraser family originally came from France, most likely from around Anjou. They are first recorded in Scotland c.1160 as having land at Keith (near Humbie, East Lothian). Frasers fought for Robert I (1274 - 1329) and married into his family via his sister.
Frasers are found throughout Scotland but are most noted in the North East of the country. The Frasers of Philorth founded the town of Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire. The 9th Laird of Philorth married into the title of Lord Saltoun. The 10th Lord Saltoun built Philorth House.
The Frasers of Lovat were another prominent branch of the family, who resided at Beaufort Castle on the banks of the River Beauly, until it was sold in 1995.
The Frasers of Muchalls hold the title of Lord Fraser and lived at Castle Fraser near Inverurie.
