Muirhead Reservoir

A reservoir located 3 miles (5 km) east southeast of Largs and a similar distance west of Kilbirnie in North Ayrshire, Muirhead Reservoir lies on the course of the Rye Water, to the northwest of Camphill Reservoir. Extending to around 44.5 ha (110 acres) and retained by a 21-m (69 -foot) high earth embankment dam, it was constructed by Paisley Corporation Water Works, opening in 1942 to supply drinking water to that town. The dam was strengthen following a partial failure the year before completion. Today it is operated by Scottish Water. A recreational fishery here is operated by Largs and District Angling Club, which stocks the reservoir with brown and rainbow trout.
