A summit in the centre of Ardrossan (North Ayrshire), Castle Hill (also known as Cannon Hill) rises to 24m (78 feet), comprising a relatively flat plateau surrounded by steep bluffs. Pont shows Castle Hill as a promontory, extending into the sea and it is likely that sand deposited at the base of the bluffs accumulated to form the site of the modern town. Castle Hill is the site of Ardrossan Castle, the origins of which can be traced back to the 12th C., of the Old Parish Church of Ardrossan, that fell into ruins in 1691 and the MacFadzean Monument, built in 1849. The entire area is now a park.
