Sunderland Hill

A modest summit in the Rhinns of Islay, Sunderland Hill rises to 130m (426 feet) a quarter-mile (0.5 km) south southeast of Sunderland and 2 miles (3 km) northwest of Bruichladdich. On the 1st January 1944 a Bristol Beaufighter on a training exercise from RAF Port Ellen crashed here, killing the pilot and injuring the observer. Flying Officer Archibald Neville Book of the Royal Canadian Air Force was buried in the Kilarrow Parish Churchyard at Bowmore with full military honours.
