Formed by the merging of the River North Esk with the River South Esk, the River Esk is formed 1 mile (1.5 km) north of the settlement of Dalkeith. Flowing northward to the Firth of Forth, it passes the settlements of Whitecraig and Inveresk before entering the Firth at Musselburgh.
