A shallow lochan on the edge of a plantation forest, Loch Muchairt is located on the neck of the Oa peninsula in the south of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, 2½ miles (4 km) west northwest of Port Ellen. It extends to 4.3 ha (10.6 acres).
