A river of NE Scotland, mostly in Moray, the Avon rises in the Cairngorm Mountains and flows 36 miles (58 km) east and north from Loch Avon to join the River Spey at Ballindalloch. Its upper reaches, to the south of Tomintoul, are remote. The word 'Avon' derives from the Gaelic 'Abhain' meaning river, resulting in the tautology 'river river'.
