A range of hills in Perth and Kinross and Angus Council Areas, the Sidlaw Hills extend northeastwards to Forfar from Kinnoull Hill near Perth. The Sidlaws separate the valley of Strathmore from the Carse of Gowrie and the Firth of Tay and rise to 455m (1492 feet) at Craigowl Hill between Dundee and Glamis. Geologically, the Sidlaws are a continuation of the Ochil Hills. They are of volcanic origin, with sheets of trachyandesite lava and ashes interbedded with sedimentary strata of Old Red Sandstone (Devonian) age.
