Methven Castle

A distinctive landmark of Central Perth and Kinross Council Area, Methven Castle is a 17th-century tower house located a mile (2 km) east of Methven. Built to the designs of John Mylne (1611-67) in 1664 for Patrick Smythe of Braco, who purchased the estate from the Crown in the same year, it was extended by James Gillespie Graham (1776 - 1855) between 1800 and 1825. It is notable for its unusual corner towers and it is where Queen Margaret Tudor died in 1541. David Smythe (1746 - 1806) adopted the title Lord Methven when he was raised to the Bench in 1793. In 1922, Methven Castle and 404 ha / 1000 acres of the estate were sold to J. Ernest Cox (1876 - 1950), the Dundee-based Jute Baron. The castle is now home to an architectural practice, which was responsible for its restoration.
