A steep little valley on the border between Moray and Aberdeenshire, the Den of Pitlurg is situated 3 miles (5 km) south of Keith. Cairds Hill lies to the north while the Hill of Shenwall lies to the south. The Burn of Cairnie flows east through the Den of Pitlurg from its source at the head of the valley.
