Towns Moor

(Irvine Moor)

An area of rough grassland located between Bogside and the town of Irvine in North Ayrshire, the Towns Moor (or Irvine Moor) lies to the north of a great loop in the River Irvine, a half-mile (1 km) north northwest of the town centre. Cadgers' Racecourse can still be seen here, used regularly from c.1636 before racing moved to the larger Bogside Racecourse, which is located just to the west, in the mid-19th C. An annual horse race on Cadgers' course still takes place as part of the Irvine Marymass Festival, held since Mediaeval times in August.

The Ayrshire Coastal Path crosses the moor to the west.
