Stobswell

A small district of N Dundee, Stobswell is located between Hilltown and Maryfield, a mile (1.5 km) north northeast of the city centre. Housing developed here in the 19th C. in conjunction with Stobswell Works, which once spun jute. Dundee Lunatic Asylum opened on Albert Street in 1820 and remained here until it moved to Westgreen in 1882, where it was eventually to become the Royal Dundee Liff Hospital. In 1868, Morgan Academy was founded to the north of Stobswell Park. Stobswell Parish Church of Scotland began on Albert Street but is now situated some distance to the north on Americanmuir Road, representing a union of four preceding congregations. The area also benefits from Stobswell Medical Centre.
