A suburban commuter railway line which serves S Glasgow, the core of the Cathcart Circle Line is a 5.2 mile / 8.4 km loop between Pollokshields West Railway Station and Pollokshields East, which is connected to Glasgow Central, 1¼ miles / 2 km to the north. The loop opened in sections between 1886 and 1894 as the Cathcart District Railway. In addition, there are two branches which diverge from this loop on either side of Cathcart Railway Station and terminate in Neilston (East Renfrewshire) and Newton (South Lanarkshire), extending to 7¾ miles (12.5 km) and 5.1 miles (8.3 km) respectively. The latter branch connects to the Argyle Line. These branches both originally formed a contiguous part of the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway, which once extended to the coast at Ardrossan to take coal from the Lanarkshire coalfields to that port. This section of the Lanarkshire and Ayrshre between Neilston and Newton, which remains in use as part of the Cathcart Circle, opened 1903-04. The lines were electrified in 1962 and there are 21 stations in total.
