The Knock

A steep hill which rises to a height of 217m / 712 feet some 1½ miles (2.5 km) north of Largs in North Ayrshire, overlooking the Firth of Clyde. Its summit is marked by an Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar and was the site of an Iron-Age vitrified hill-fort which is now a scheduled ancient monument. The fort was examined by the noted archaeologist V. Gordon Childe in the 1940s. A series of concentric ramparts and ditches remain. The Ayrshire Coastal Path loops around the summit.
