Black Bay

A bay on the N coast of the Melvaig Peninsula in the North West Highlands, which is unnamed on Ordnance Survey maps, Black Bay lies to the west of the entrance to Loch Ewe, 1¼ miles (2 km) northwest of Cove. It was here that the twelve survivors from the liberty ship SS William H. Welch, which ran aground offshore on Eilean Furadh Mor on 26th February 1944, were pulled ashore. A memorial was erected by the local community and the remains of the ship's lifeboats can still be seen on the foreshore (2018).
