Cairneyhill Quarry

A large quarry which has completely denuded Cairney or Cairny Hill in North Lanarkshire. Cairneyhill Quarry was established in the 1950s and has been progressively extended, exploiting a large microgabbro igneous intrusion of Carboniferous age, referred to as whinstone. It now extends to 65 ha / 161 acres, is operated by Tarmac Plc (2019) and produces asphalt for road-building and aggregate for the construction industry.
