Big Strand

(Traigh Mhòr)

Big Strand (Gael: Traigh Mhòr) is the longest beach on the island of Islay in the Inner Hebrides. It occupies the length of Laggan Bay, between Laggan and Kintra and extends to 5 miles (8 km), interrupted only by Knockangle Point. Dunes and machair lie behind. Access either involves a ¾-mile (1.2 km) walk over peat bog and machair, or vehicle access via tracks at the extreme north and to the north of the airport, or roads at Machrie Hotel and Kintra in the south.
