Cartland Bridge

A remarkable viaduct which carries the A73 road across the steep gorge cut by the Mouse Water between Lanark to Carluke in South Lanarkshire. The Cartland Bridge was completed in 1822 to the designs of Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834) with John Gibb (1776 - 1850) serving as the contractor. It comprises three arched-spans, each 15.8 m / 52 feet, and reaches a height of 39.3m / 129 feet above the river bed, which is said to be the highest bridge over an inland water in Scotland. Robert Hutchison, the Provost of Lanark, had laid the foundation stone in the summer of 1821.
