Shelley Jofre


1969 -

Journalist. Born in Irvine (North Ayrshire), Jofre is the daughter of nationalist politician Kay Ullrich. She was educated at the University of Stirling, followed by a diploma in Newspaper Journalism at City University in London. She joined the BBC in 1991 working as a junior reporter on Reporting Scotland and four years later joined the current affairs programme Frontline Scotland. She spent time with the flagship news review programme Newsnight and was also involved with reporting from Scotland during the General Election campaign of 1997. However, she came to prominence as the investigative journalist who revealed the dangers of the anti-depressant drug Seroxat on the BBC Panorama programme in 2002. The drug was shown to be addictive and dangerous to some individuals and its use was restricted by the UK government. Jofre made several followup reports.

Other significant reports for Panorama included an investigations into the Lockerbie bombers (1997), paedophiles on the internet (1999) and the failings of Scotland's criminal fingerprint bureau in 2000.

She won the BAFTA Scotland award for Best Current Affairs programme in 1995, was shortlisted for the Royal Television Society Young Journalist of The Year in 1997, the RTS Regional Journalist of The Year (1998 ).

Jofre lives in Glasgow.
