Foswell House

An estate and B-listed house in S Perth & Kinross, Foswell is situated 2 miles (3 km) southeast of Auchterarder. Built in the late 18th C. for Colonel John Henderson (1740 - 1811), a retired owner of plantations in Jamaica, the house was originally known as Foswell Bank and featured verandahs in the style of a plantation house. The house is rectangular with a pair of small crow-stepped gables projecting from the two-storey main block one quarter and three quarters of the way along its length. In 1897, the property was acquired by the Haldane family, who already owned the adjacent estate of Cloan. In 1929 a curved two-storey entrance tower was added between the projecting gables built from stone which was salvaged from Hamilton Palace in Lanarkshire. The house served as an evacuation centre for young children during the Second World War. The six-bedroom house retains several wood-panelled rooms. It was home to Graeme Haldane (1897 - 1981) who installed an early heat-pump here in 1928. His descendents sold Foswell in 2015.

The estate extends to over 405 ha (1000 acres) and includes two farms and several cottages.
