A flooded quarry in East Renfrewshire, Pilmuir Quarry operated between 1930 and the 1970s, producing dolerite (or whinstone) for road-building. It lies immediately to the west of the A77 road and M77 motorway, 1¼ miles (2 km) southwest of Newton Mearns. Following closure, it was proposed as a landfill site but slowly flooded to create a 4.5 ha (11 acre) body of water. Despite being fenced off, it subsequently became a focus for local youths, cliff-diving, swimming and fishing, with several life-threatening incidents having occurred.
