Stephen Adam

1848 - 1910

Stained-glass artist. Born at Bonnington (Edinburgh), Adam was educated at Canonmills School before gaining an apprenticeship with Edinburgh company of stained glass-makers Ballantyne & Allan. He moved to Glasgow in 1870 and set up his own studio in Bath Street.

His modern style was a reaction against the Gothic and his work includes domestic stained glass as well as the ecclesiastical. Examples can been seen at Paisley Abbey, St. James Episcopal Church (Leith), St. Andrew Blackadder Church (North Berwick), New Kilpatrick Church (Bearsden) and in the People's Palace (Glasgow).

Adam is also noted for two publications on his art; namely Stained Glass - Its History and Development (1877) and The Truth in Decorative Art - Stained Glass Medieval and Modern (1896).
