Hello everyone.
I am looking for information on two people.
One of whom was an amateur violin maker. His name is Thomas A Glover, who was around Gattonside circa 1937.
Glover made A violin for the second person that I am looking for information on. His name Was Derek John Baust.
had it restored, I still have to have the back of it properly repaired as it is coming away underneath the chin area at the bottom. It does play and sounds quite nice.
It would be nice if the glover family were to take it back to the fold.
Anyone with any information on any of this please contact James on galby41@supanet.com
Many Thanks

I am looking for information about St. Germains in East Lothian. My mother grew up in a large home there, but moved to the U.S. in 1926. She died four years ago at the age of 83. She did go back and visit her home some years ago and took a few photographs but I don't know the exact location of the home. My sister will be visiting Scotland on holiday in the latter part of October. I would love to get any information I can for her. My mother's name was Sigrid Gudmundsson. Her parents were Elisabeth Neilson Gudmundsson and Andres Gudmundsson. Her siblings were Olaf, Norman, Eda, Edna, and Gerda. I appreciate any information anyone can provide!

It has recently come to my notice that a ring with historical connections to the Douglas clan is coming up for sale at a Knutsford saleroom. The lot contains provanence which is why I am contacting you, It mentions Lord Derwentwater, Mary queen of Scots and Lady Margret Douglas so any information on these people may help me to validate and buy the ring. Yours faithfully Marc A.

Having been born over fifty years ago in Lanarkshire I was always fascinated by the many tales of the Black Douglas. I must say that I have found this site extremely helpful in providing information that enabled me to achieve my ambition to write a book on the life and adventures of the good Sir James Douglas (The true Brave heart)

My book is published by Trafford and can be found at:

Well done to the Gazetteer for Scotland.

I haven't seen either the name CRAIG or LORIMER on this comment page.
My grandmother Ellen (Helen) LORIMER moved to NJ, USA; from Paisley Scotland around 1913 with 4 sisters Isabelle, Mary, Annie, and ??. She left behind 8 more sisters, and 5 brothers.
One of the sisters who stayed in Scotland was, Margaret who married BEST, their son is GEORGE BEST (football).
My grandfather ROBERT CRAIG moved to USA a couple years later, he had 4 brothers Thomas, Hugh, and the other 2 I can't remember their names as I'm writing this.
I'm HOPING somebody has some information about any family members out there.

Sincerely, Bonnie Davis (Craig)

Subject: Mitchell Family Tartan, Crest or Coat of Arms

Many times we have received advertisements through the mail supposedly displaying the Mithcell tartan, crest, or coat of arms. Each claims to be the official design, yet none of them are the same. Our research to date has only produced more confusion, i.e. that the Mitchells come under the Inverness or Ferguson Clans.

Does anyone have information about the authentic design or even pictures that could be sent?

Thanks in advance,

Robert E. Mitchell

I'm looking for a map of Islay showing Torra, Killarrow in the 1800s. My ancestors, the Kerrs and the Orrs came from this area, and I would like to get an idea of its location.

Hi! This website is great! My family is from Kyles Stocknish in Harris. They immigrated to Canada in 1863. I would like to know where abouts in Harris this town is and I would LOVE to see pictures! I want to come to Scotland some day and visit the homeland of my ancestors.

My Great Great Great Grandfather Alexander McLeod (Parents: John and Catherine McLeod) married Christina McDonald (Parents: Angus and Catherine McDonald)in Jan. 1863 and then moved to Canada. If this sounds like your family....give me a shout....want to know if I have any living relatives still residing in Scotland today!!

Also if anyone knows how I can find out where exactly Kyles Stocknish is too.....let me know!! Thanks very much!!

11 April 2004:
I am just hoping that someone, somewhere can help me.
In the 50's my sister and I always spent my summer holidays in a little bungalow in Blairmore with my Aunt Maggie. Her surname was Muir. There were three bungalows set back from the Loch with a little lane and a burn running alongside. It was about a mile from the pier. My sister and I had the most wonderful holidays there, playing on the beach, collecting mussels for Aunt Maggie. I heard that she died about 12 years ago. (Not really sure) She smoked like a chimney and was about 100 yrs old when she died. I do not even have the address of the cottages. Can anyone help me with any information on Blairmore
or my old aunt Maggie. Love your site.
Thank you so much Sue

I am interested in the settlement of CORDON on Arran The reason for this is my maiden name is CORDON and am tracing my family tree. My research has taken me back to Nottingham and Derby as far back as the 1700's but I can not get any further.Just wondered if anyone can shed light as to how this settlement got its name and if there is a link between this and my family name. Also a wonderfull site, very interesting.

I love this site - it's quite amazing! You have all done an excellent job! I was surprised to see no reference to Robert FitzRoy, the captain of the H.M.S. Beagle during Darwin's historical voyage. I assume he's Scottish by descent, with name like that!

I stumbled on your site while doing genealogy research, it is a very great and informative site. I was looking for South Uist, where my gggrandfather was born. His name was Peter Nicholson, born about 1835 and immigrated to Canada in the 1840's-1850's. He had a brother or cousin, Sandy Nicholson and a cousin named James Graham Haggart who was a former Postmaster-General and former Minister of Railways and Canals of Canada.
His parents were Malcolm Nicholson and Christina Macdonald. James father was John H. Haggart from Bredalbane, Scotland and mother Isabella Graham from the Isle of Skye. I am hoping that someone out there might have some info on these families as this is all that I can find. Please contact me if you do.
Thank you

Hello, I have only recently discovered this site. I am in the process of trying to trace my family tree and ancestral homeland. I am interested in the history of the Langwell Forest area, to include the Langwell River, a river of the Caithness district of the Highland Council Area. Any information or suggested searches would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

My MARSHALL, McCULLUM, and YOUNG ancestors all worked on the Forth Railway Bridge, either as Stonemasons or as in the case of my Great Grandfather, Walter YOUNG, the nightwatchman/fireman who married Barbara Robertson BROWN in 1882.

My Grandmother, Elizabeth YOUNG was born beneath the bridge in a tied cottage, apparently.
I would be interested to know if there are any employment records kept about the Construction workers, and is so how I might access them. Or if there were any photographs taken of the workforce during construction.
The MARSHALL family, into which Elizabeth YOUNG married, lived in Inverkeithing, where, at one time they had owned a Drapery shop in Bank Street.
If anyone can add to this, I would love to hear from them.
