Clunie

Perth and Kinross

A settlement on the west shore of the Loch of Clunie, eastern Perth and Kinross, Clunie lies in the parish of Stormont, 4 miles (7 km) west of Blairgowrie. On a knoll by the village are traces of a building said to have been used as a base for hunting in the nearby royal forest of Clunie and on an artificial island on the loch are the ruins of Clunie Castle, a tower house of the bishops of Dunkeld built on the site of an Iron Age lake dwelling or crannog. Robert Crichton, the last pre-Reformation bishop handed the property over to his near relative Robert Crichton of Eliock whose son James, better known as the Admirable Crichton (1560-83), spent his childhood there. The parish church, rebuilt in 1840, has within its churchyard a mausoleum with a 12th or early 13th Century Romanesque doorway which probably belonged to one of the earlier churches on that site.
