Longriggend

(Upperton)
North Lanarkshire

A small village of North Lanarkshire Council Area, Longriggend lies 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Airdrie. A railway station opened here in 1840 on the Slamannan Railway, which was a line that mainly served local coal mines. This station closed in 1930. There was an attempt to change the name Longriggend to Upperton in 2002 because the residents wanted to disassociate the settlement from a remand centre, situated close to the village, which closed in 2000.
