A village of the Ross and Cromarty district of Highland Council, Poolewe lies at the head of Loch Ewe 4 miles (6.5 km) northeast of Gairloch Loch and 2 miles (3 km) from the head of Loch Maree. There village includes a post office, a few shops, a primary school and three churches. Notable buildings include St. Maelrubha's Episcopal Church (1965).

To the south of St. Maelrubha Close in the west of the village are the remains of the Highland Fieldcraft Training Camp. This was created by the War Office in 1943 under the command of Thomas Corbett, 2nd Lord Rowallan (1895 - 1977) to instil leadership skills into potential officers. It operated until 1945.

The surrounding area is owned by the National Trust for Scotland, and to the north lies their Inverewe Garden which, although further north than Moscow, is home to many sub-tropical plants.
