Valleyfield

Fife

A large village in W Fife, Valleyfield is located a mile (1.5 km) east of Culross and comprises the settlements of High and Low Valleyfield. The village was closely associated with the Valleyfield Colliery, which was developed on the Valleyfield Estate in 1908 by the East Fife Coal Company. This was worked until 1978 and was the scene of a mining disaster in 1939, when 35 miners lost their lives. A memorial at the entrance to High Valleyfield commemorates this event. By 1965 this mine had extended its workings under the Firth of Forth to link with the Kinneil Colliery in Bo'ness and the two pits together employed 1800 men. To the southeast of Valleyfield lies Torry Bay, an inlet on the northern shore of the Forth, much of which has been reclaimed using spoil from the mine and subsequently with ash from Longannet Power Station.
