A small settlement in the East Ayrshire coalfield, Cronberry is located a mile (1.5 km) northeast of Lugar. There was a tile-works here in the middle of the 19th century but the settlement came into being in connection with iron-stone mining for the iron-works at Lugar. The famous Bill Shankly (1913-81) played for the now-defunct Cronberry Eglinton football team in 1931-32.
From 1848, Cronberry also benefitted from a railway station, on the opposite bank of the Bellow Water, but the line closed in 1976. The railway is planned to re-open for the transportation of coal from open-cast mines.
