A village in the Formartine district of Aberdeenshire, Tarves lies 4 miles (6 km) northeast of Oldmeldrum. Situated on the road from Aberdeen to Buchan, it developed in the 19th Century, many of its buildings being erected around a central square. To the north is Haddo House (1731) and to the east on a hilltop is a folly known as the Prop of Ythsie, built in 1862 to commemorate the 4th Earl of Aberdeen who was a Prime minister at the time of the Crimean War.
