Kirktown of Mortlach

Moray

A village on the Dullan Water adjacent to Dufftown, the Kirktown of Mortlach has long been a religious site associated with St Moluag of Bangor in Ireland who came here in the 6th Century. Its church dates from the 13th century and in its churchyard stands the Battle Stone, a monument said to mark the final defeat of the Danes by Malcolm Canmore in 1010. In the vestibule of the church is an earlier Pictish symbol stone known as the Elephant Stone. Mortlach distillery lies downstream.
