Braidwood

A commuter village in South Lanarkshire, Braidwood is located 2 miles (3 km) south of Carluke and 7 miles (10 km) northwest of Carstairs Junction. Once a centre of limestone production, Braidwood was an ancient barony that belonged to the Earls of Douglas, Earls of Angus and the Lockharts of Carnwath, amongst others. Close to the village is Hallbar Tower, a 16th Century fortification which has built in response to a 1593 Act of Parliament and the threat posed by Border reivers. The West Coast Main Line passes through the village but its station, which had operated since 1849, closed in 1962.
